In 1983,  Denzel Washington married Pauletta Pearson (now Pauletta Washington), whom he met on the set of the 1977  made-for-television movie “Wilma”. In 1995, the couple renewed their wedding vows in South Africa with Archbishop Desmond Tutu officiating.

Pauletta Pearson Washington (born September 28, 1951) is an actress. In 1970, she was the first black contestant in the Miss North Carolina Pageant, a preliminary to Miss America. She was the 2nd runner-up.

The couple have four children: John David (born July 28, 1984), who signed a football contract with the St. Louis Rams in May 2006 after playing college football at Morehouse; Katia (born November 1987), who is attending Yale University, and twins Olivia and Malcolm (named in honor of Malcolm X -born April 10, 1991).
