Meet Rebecca Liddicoat, fiancee of Baylor University quarterback and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. Robert and Rebecca have dated for several years.
After Griffin’s team (Baylor) qualified for a bowl game last season in October 2010, he got on his knees and popped the question to his girlfriend Rebecca of Boulder, Colorado.
During an interview with Star-telegram.com’s Dwain Price, Griffin broke down how he proposed to girlfriend Rebecca.
“Well, there’s lies involved in proposals, so I told her after the game that I had to go to the (indoor football practice) facility,” Griffin said. “I told her me and the team leaders had to do something in there.
“So I told her I could do mine (Saturday night), and they were going to do theirs (Sunday), which makes it a bold-face lie. But she believed it, so I told her to come in there.”
“I went in the bathroom and my dad gave me the ring, and I walked in the indoor (facility), and I had candles everywhere,” Griffin said. “I had one of my teammates playing the guitar, so I talked to her and serenaded her. I walked into the middle where her family was standing with candles and I popped the question.
“I couldn’t see her face to see her crying, because it was so dark. But when I kissed her I felt the wetness on her cheeks.”
“She said yes and she cried,” Griffin said. “So I did a pretty good job.”
Griffin told Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that no wedding date has been set yet.
“I’ve got to get out of college to provide for my family before I get married,” Griffin said. “I’m still going to school after this.”
On December 10, 2011, Robert Griffin III won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first player from Baylor University to win the award. More than likely, Griffin will enter the NFL Draft after this season.

The vast majority of young black women will not date a black man unless he’s attractive, packing(and advertising the fact) or have money, bling/bling. He probably didn’t fall into any of those category before college. Once he start playing sports, most of those women got upsets that he ignored them like they did him while he was growing up. Since he found a lady that love him before the notary, I say enjoy your life with her. New flash: the majority of black men with money/fame marry black women. Don’t hate, gravitate towards likely black men before they become rich and famous,ect.

Griffin and his fiancé met and fell in love long before he became a household name. My son went to Baylor with him. It has nothing to do with race. Just two people who met, got to know each other and fell in love. They are both very grounded people. it’s sad to me to hear how shallow and empty many of you posters are.
Most of you think it’s black women that are complaining, but, you’d be surprised to know who is really sending all those derogatory messages about the black man marrying a white woman. Devil in disguise!

I just searched my way in here after reading about his elegant proposal the other day. There’s just something special about this kid. Congratulations and continued success to you and your lovely fiancé Griff!!!
As far as the race comments…
What typically happens in cases like this is that a kid like Griff (military parents, moved around, etc.) may not appear ‘black enough’ or even attractive to young black girls. With as much moving around as his family did in his youth he may have not been able to relate to the black community all the time and vice-versa. I’m not saying that this made Griff resent his community but it definitely didn’t make him feel partial toward black women when seeking a romantic partner.
It is likely that when Griff attended college he probably became interested in women that were more relatable to people or friends he’d met along the way. In ALL culture’s communities there is a large segment of people who simply cannot see ANYONE in a powerful position until they are actually in that position. Griff was lucky enough to find a woman who appears to have loved and accepted him long before the hoopla.
Therefore, I don’t think it’s so much that he couldn’t find a black woman, I think it’s more likely that they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) find him.
I’m pretty sure there are NO black cheerleaders at Baylor, lol. But from the moment I read the story of their engagement, I knew she was white.@wakywaky who surmises that there are apparently no black women who dress conservatively (sorry, but in every photo she seems to have her breasts hanging out) who are smart Christians worthy of marriage, you need to check YOUR backstory.(MBA-degreed, busty, Baptist, right here). If she were black, he would have at least 5 kids which would MAYBE lead to a 10 year engagement before even considering marriage.
From a black woman who dates white and black men, that’s just been my observation of black athletes and not just from TV shows like Basketball Babymamas.

The young lady “is” attractive, she’s just not over exposing herself and not painting herself up like a hooker-n-heat! The guy graduated HS at 17, got his BA in 3 years and is going to get his masters in 5. He’s reportedly been very active doing community service work, alone with being a multi-sport superstar. That tells me that he didn’t have much time to do a lot of date-social partying, so unless his former girlfriend is as devout a Christian as he seems to be, she was most likely not feeling his lifestyle and that feeling would most certainly applies to most black honeys.
