Check out this inspiring story about 2012 Olympic gold medal winning gymnast, Gabby Douglas, who is the second African-American female to make the U.S. Olympic team since Dominique Dawes back in 1996.

Douglas, nicknamed the “Flying Squirrel” for her aerial performance on the uneven bars, also made history by becoming the second black female gymnast to capture an Olympic gold medal.

Douglass and the U.S. women’s gymnastics team won the gold medal today and it marked the first gold medal for the U.S. team since 1996 in Atlanta.

Douglas, along with her Olympic teammates Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross, won the gold medal earlier today by defeating the Russian team who won silver and the Romanian team who won bronze.

Douglas, 16, started gymnastics when she was 6 years old, after her sister Arielle convinced her mother to let her do gymnastics. Gabby went on to earn the 2004 State Championship title in Virginia.
