Ballerwives.com has learned that Hampton University’s business school dean, Sid Credie, is standing by a controversial ban on male students wearing dreadlocks and cornrows in class.
Male students enrolled in the school’s 5-year MBA program who take the seminar class cannot wear dreadlocks or cornrows in class.
The ban, which began in 2001, has been controversial over the years.
“I don’t think it shouldn’t matter what the hairstyle. It’s my life. I should be able to do whatever I want to do,” said incoming freshman Uriah Bethea, who wears dreadlocks and says he wouldn’t compromise his look for a class.
“I would just find another major,” he added.
Business School Dean Sid Credle believes the ban has been effective in helping his students land corporate jobs.
“We’ve been very successful. We’ve placed more than 99 percent of the students who have graduated from this school, this program,” said Credle.
“These students choose to be in this program and aspire to be leaders in the business world. We model these students after the top African-Americans in the business world,” said HU spokesperson Naima Ford.
Credle said it’s important for students to look the part when looking for a job.
Credle added, “I mean Charles drew didn’t wear, Muhammad Ali didn’t wear it. martin Luther kind didn’t wear it.”

Self hatred is real. And this is what it looks like when associated with a position of power. View a picture of the dean his hair is slicked back to mimic a european style similar to the “conk” worn by malcolm x before he started to love himself and gain knowledge of self. Locks and braids are an african style of wearing ones hair. Businesses are started by everyday people – so their ideologies are represented in their hiring practices and though the EEOC exists people still hire those that look like themselves. All that being said what does this article mean to you now. The dean is forcing a european mindset and assimilation tactic upon the youth and not allowing them to be the generation that breaks open a new door where hair styles of all kinds are allowed. So sad to see young men being forced to make a decision between either being true to themselves (hair style) or obtaining an education from Hampton. As tough as it can be already for young global majority males (Trayvon Martin) this ignorance persists.
